FSC's Mathematics curriculum covers a broad and rigorous range of mathematical concepts, including complex analysis, differential equations, biostatistics, knot theory, algebraic group theory, and the history of mathematics. Up-to-date computer laboratories support hands-on learning throughout the program, and FSC's low student-faculty ratio means you have access to independent study opportunities on any mathematical topic that interests you.

Teacher Certification Students who meet the Mathematics major requirements alongside the professional coursework specified by the School of Education are eligible for a Florida Professional Teacher Certificate in Mathematics (6-12). Additional coursework through the School of Education is required.

Progress Requirements Only courses in which grades of C or higher are earned may count toward the major or minor in mathematics.

Double Major Policy Double-dipping is allowed between declared Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and Data Analytics majors. A minimum of 12 credits must be exclusive to each declared major and may not be double-dipped. This policy makes it straightforward for mathematically inclined students to pursue more than one program within the department.

Core areas of study include:

  • Algebra and calculus
  • Statistics and coding theory
  • Graph theory and analysis
  • Complex analysis
  • Differential equations
  • Biostatistics
  • Knot theory
  • Algebraic group theory
  • History of mathematics
  • Independent study and research

Mathematics students at FSC begin their journey together. All first-year students are placed in a learning community with fellow math majors, a structured environment focused on problem-based, integrative, and collaborative learning. These early connections often become the foundation for research partnerships and friendships that last well beyond graduation.

Beyond the first year, students can participate in the SCUDEM Challenge, a Differential Equations Modeling Challenge hosted by SIMIODE, where FSC students have presented alongside peers from institutions across the country and had their work accepted for publication in peer-reviewed mathematics journals.

Outside the classroom, the Math Club hosts several events each semester for math majors and students interested in mathematics, including game nights, ice cream socials, pizza reviews, and other activities that provide opportunities to hang out and study together.

Outcomes and Careers in Mathematics

"Graduate school became a real possibility for me because of the support I got from the mathematics department. Courses like graph theory and abstract algebra pushed me, faculty encouraged me to compete in SCUDEM IV as an undergraduate, and having the option to do a senior research project in any area of math is what made me want to become a research mathematician."
