Groups & Outreach Programming

The FSC Counseling Center offers more than one-on-one support. Through group counseling programs and outreach presentations, we meet students where they are: in the classroom, on the field, in the studio, and everywhere in between. Whether you're looking to connect with peers, build new skills, or bring a wellness presentation to your class or organization, we have something for you.

Group Counseling Services

These are smaller groups that are more therapeutic focused. Email us for information concerning meeting dates and times.

Food, Mood, & Movement

This drop-in group gives students practical information about how their nutrition and lifestyle choices affect their emotions, moods, and actions. Each session begins with a 30-minute psychoeducation session, followed directly by optional group exercise at the Wellness Center. Students can take part in the educational session only or the exercise session only, but to make sustainable, lasting lifestyle changes, we strongly encourage joining both.

Artful Minds

Come join us for Artful Minds, an art-centered group designed to help students explore their emotions and experiences through creativity. Each week, we'll focus on a different mental health topic, such as anxiety, self-esteem, healthy relationships, and mindfulness, using themed art activities and guided group discussion. This group offers a safe, supportive space to build self-awareness, reduce stress, and connect with peers through the power of art. No artistic experience is required. Just come with an open mind and a willingness to create.

Drumbeat

Drumbeat is a relaxed, enjoyable, and highly interactive group that focuses on building relationships, communicating, and managing social anxiety. You'll learn simple beats on a djembe drum, and no musical experience is required. Drumbeat is an evidence-based curriculum that uses drums, bilateral movement, and verbal processing to help you better understand healthy relationships and build effective strategies for coping with anxiety. It's a great fit if you're struggling to connect with others, feeling homesick, or simply looking to strengthen your social skills.

The group is limited to nine participants and keeps the same members throughout, so everyone gets the most benefit. Spots are first come, first served, and it may take a few weeks to fill the group, so join us soon.

Run-a-Moc: Couch to 5K Walk/Run Training Program

This walk and run training program will build your confidence through personal growth and physical achievement. Whether you're looking to conquer your first 5K or simply add more movement to your week, this beginner-friendly program will help you stay motivated throughout the semester.

Self-Care With Sophie

This weekly meetup offers a much-needed break, with fun, creative ways to recharge and unwind. You'll learn how to practice self-care during the stress of academic life. Our Director of Pawsitivity, Sophie, visits each week to help build community and connection as students bond over their shared love of animals. It's a delightful way to support your wellbeing, and Sophie's too.

Outreach Presentations

Bring the Counseling Center to your class, office, or student organization. Our staff offer wellness presentations in person or virtually, on topics like balancing your wellness, supporting a student in distress, and Safe Zone training. Don't see the topic you need? Ask us, and we'll do our best to accommodate your request based on staff availability.

To request a presentation, email counseling@flsouthern.edu at least two weeks in advance. Most presentations run at least one hour. In your email, include:

  • Your topic
  • Setting (in person or virtual)
  • Expected group size
  • Dates and times that work for you

Balancing Your Wellness

Holistic wellness is the conscious process to unlock your full potential. This workshop will review the FSC Wellness Wheel and the importance of keeping a balance between the different dimensions (social, emotional, physical, intellectual, spiritual, and financial/occupational) for optimal living.

Mocs CARE

This program is for faculty members, staff or student organizations to assist in identifying the warning signs of a student in distress, establishing a dialogue with the identified individual, and resources that may assist you in supporting the student/peer. This program is scheduled to be presented virtually or in person upon request to any department of student organization.
