Who We Are

The Moccasin Battalion is Florida Southern College’s Army ROTC program, one of the oldest in the state and among the most respected in the Southeast. Founded in 1951, the program has trained generations of officers who have served on active duty, in the Army Reserve, and in the Army National Guard, as well as graduates who carry their leadership into law school, medical school, government service, and the private sector.

We are a battalion built on partnership. Florida Southern College is the host institution for the Moccasin Battalion, with Southeastern University and Polk State College as cross-town partner institutions. Cadets from all three schools come from diverse backgrounds, academic majors, and career aspirations. Some arrive on campus determined to pursue a career in the Army, while others join to challenge themselves, earn a scholarship, or develop leadership skills they can apply beyond the military. Regardless of their path, every cadet leaves the program more confident, capable, and prepared to lead.

See Cadet Life in Action

The Moccasin Battalion is more than what you can read on a page. See what our cadets actually do—from physical training and field exercises to leadership development and Army training opportunities across the country.

Hear from Our Cadets

Our cadets travel the world, intern with organizations such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and National Security Agency (NSA), study languages ranging from Swahili to Arabic, and shadow Army officers at installations across the country. The best way to understand the ROTC experience at Florida Southern College is to hear directly from the cadets who have lived it.

"I loved Project Go! I was able to learn a whole new language and culture for 10 weeks! I went to the Dead Sea, Jordan River, Wadi Rum (where they filmed Star Wars) and more! I also became scuba certified. And, I made lifelong friends who are in other ROTC programs. It was a once in a lifetime experience that wasn’t just all paid for, but actually earned me money. My family was able to visit, which was a nice touch from home. I wasn’t even too homesick because of all the fun I was having. It’s easy to sign up for, and something I would recommend to everyone. All you need to do is research what language you want to learn and location you want to go. You need to fill out a small resume and get a letter of recommendation from your Professor of Military Science. That’s all! It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made within ROTC."

Cadet Freeman

"At my AMEDD internship I was fortunate to work with a 64A, which is an Army Veterinarian. I shadowed for 28 days following my Cadet Summer Training. This internship involved so many opportunities to see what my career would be like if I became an Army Veterinarian. Some of these opportunities were seeing patients that were either federal working dogs or military working dogs, as well as civilian dogs for those that are active service or veterans. I also was able to go on a food audit to see how they inspect caterers that serve military events. I was also able to take a tour of the Old Guard stables at Fort Myer in Washington D.C. Overall, this internship was a real eye-opener for me as to what a month as a 64A would look like, and I am grateful I was chosen to participate in this amazing opportunity."
